Brooklyn Flea comes Downtown for the Winter

We just heard from Brownstoner that the Brooklyn Flea is taking over the former bank at Skylight One Hanson, the new event space in the Williamsburgh Savings Bank. Here are the details from the press release:

The Flea at One Hanson will take place for 12 weekends only, from January 9+10 through March 27+28. The market will be open from 10am to 5pm, Saturday and Sunday. Starting April 3+4, the Flea returns to its outdoor locations, through November: Saturdays in Fort Greene and Sundays in DUMBO. With 100 vendors taking over teller windows, banking kiosks, secret rooms, and even the former vault in the landmark space—which features 63-foot ceilings, giant stained-glass windows, gorgeous tile mosaics, ornate Art Deco details, even a “whisper wall”—the Flea is presenting dozens of small businesses in a former monument to commerce, while also opening up this historic space to the public. The location above 10 subway lines and the LIRR provides easy access for visitors from across the region, and the majestic setting is an attraction unto itself.

Celebrity performs at Downtown Brooklyn Holiday Event

Melinda Shankar, or Degrassi’s “Alli”, was spotted by a group of students from the Urban Assembly School Choir during their performance at Hoyt Plaza in Downtown Brooklyn. Melinda signed autographs and even joined the group to sing a couple holiday songs.

The performance was part of the Court-Livingston-Schermerhorn Business Improvement District’s Holiday Welcome Center event, which encourages shoppers to support local businesses this holiday season and sponsors live musical performances in Downtown Brooklyn.

On Schermerhorn Street:

Julian Peterson (http://www.julianpeterson.com/) performs in Brooklyn Fare (12pm-2pm).Peterson is in love with the passion and elegance of old soul and blues singers. He pays tribute to many great artists– Ray Charles, Al Green, Otis Redding, Muddy Waters, and Freddie King, with a sound that is fresh and engaging. He describes the music he writes as a mix of old and new; music with bluesy melodic lines and passionate lyrics. Peterson’s music is a translation of sorts: what soul sounds like in the high mountains of Colorado.

and…

In Hoyt Plaza, the Urban Assembly School for Law and Justice MUSIC ENSEMBLE, a student-led, multi-instrumental band/choir performing popular music from a variety of styles and traditions, will sing and play drums, bass guitar, steel pan, and keyboards.  Wednesday’s performance will consist of secular, Christian, and Jewish holiday music, in addition to classic pop numbers by the Jackson 5, the Temptations, Mario, and more!
